TARGET AUDIENCE:  Voluntary & Community Groups who provide a service to Adults at Risk (vulnerable adults)

CONTENT:  The Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) creates a framework to provide protection for people who cannot make decisions for themselves. It contains provision for assessing whether people have the mental capacity to make decisions, procedures for making decisions on behalf of people who lack mental capacity and safeguards. The underlying philosophy of the MCA is that any decision made, or action taken, on behalf of someone who lacks the capacity to make the decision or act for themselves must be made in their best interests. The MCA came into force on 1 October 2007. The session will cover the 2 stage test for assessing mental capacity, the 5 Principles which underpin everything in the Act and will also detail how and when to assess mental capacity and who does it / who is responsible (not always the same).

CONTENT:  There is undoubtedly a strong link between Housing and Safeguarding however levels of awareness can differ throughout the UK. Effective partnership working is key to identifying risk / vulnerabilities, sharing information, delivering appropriately tailored support, early intervention and the avoidance of Serious Case Review. Over the coming months a selection of Housing / Anti-Social Behaviour Officers and Social Workers will ‘job swap’ with their counterparts in each of the Early Intervention Panel areas across Calderdale to spend a ‘day in the life’ on the other side. The objective of this project is to enable colleagues to obtain hand experience of the challenges / barriers faced, workloads and specialist knowledge required in order to undertake these respective Safeguarding roles. The Workshop will compliment the ‘job swap’ project and provide a wider opportunity to debate these issues, share learning outcomes and identify workable solutions for improving collective service delivery.
